June 2018 Nor’Easter

The Northeast Iowa Council officially welcomes girls in the Cub Scout program in August 2018. As a council we want to make sure all of our leaders are prepared for welcoming girls into their units. We strongly encourage all leaders to attend the August roundtable. At this meeting, the leaders will be given the specifics on how to run recruitment nights, changes to expect as we welcome girls and much more. The goal is to make sure each leader feels comfortable with the changes as we move forward!

Roundtable Dates
Dubuque Roundtable: Thursday, August 2nd, 7PM, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dubuque
Dellaykee Roundtable: Tuesday, August 7th, 7PM, Monona Public Library OR Manchester Public Library

Overnight Family Camp:Our Cub Scout Overnight Camp has been updated to an Overnight Family Camp. What does this mean? It means, if you have a current Cub Scout, any family members can register and join him at the Overnight Camp. Register at: https://scoutingevent.com/178-17056 or call us with any questions at 563.556.4343.

Please note: all activities are geared toward Cub Scout aged youth, and those younger may not be able to participate in all activities.

Cub Scout Day Camp: Know someone who’s not sure if their child would enjoy Cub Scouts? Have them test out the fun activities at Cub Scout Day Camp! All youth, boy & girls going into Kindergarten-5th grade, are invited to attend.

Dubuque Day Camp takes place on Saturday, August 4 at A.Y. McDonald Park in Dubuque. Registration begins at 9:00 am with activities starting at 9:30 am. Activities include: Geode cracking, tug-of-war, bb guns, archery, science experiments, and so much more. Register at: https://scoutingevent.com/178-DayCamp

A lot of work has been going on at Camp C.S. Klaus. Here are some highlights:

  • The new waterfall observation area: Tremendous thanks once again goes to generosity of the Munter Foundation for providing the funding for this incredible project. We are sure that Mr. Munter would be incredibly proud of how his legacy gift continues to improve our beautiful camp.
  • Tribute Garden: 15 bricks have been customized and installed at the base of the flag-pole area at the start of the Tribute Garden. Thank you to all the supporters of this project. Want a brick of your own? More information available at: http://www.scoutsiowa.org/articles/camp-c-s-klaus-tribute-garden/?portfolioCats=13
  • Trading Post Deck: Large decking has been added to the Trading Post. The area is perfect for Scouts and Scouters to enjoy their treats while sharing stories of their days’ adventures.

The safety of our youth participants, volunteers and staff is a priority for everybody at Philmont Scout Ranch and the Boy Scouts of America.  While efforts continue to extinguish the fire currently burning in the back-country, the anticipated damage and inability to access the affected areas makes it currently impossible to host back country programs.  Until the fire is extinguished, the areas are inspected and the damage assessed, it is impossible to definitively state when those programs will resume.

At this time, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all backcountry treks that were scheduled to take place in the Philmont backcountry from June 8 – July 14, 2018.  We hope that back country treks may resume after July 14, 2018 with altered itineraries, assuming the back country is safe and infrastructure is restored.

Additionally, programs scheduled to take place at Philmont Training Center will also be canceled through June 23, 2018. The Philmont Training Center expects to welcome back participants beginning with Philmont Family Adventure on June 24, 2018.

Boy Scout Camp Tips

  • Schedule the doctor visit. A signed physical form (parts A, B, and C) is required for Boy Scout Summer camp. The physical must have been completed within the last 12 months, and a chiropractor exam is not accepted.
  • Follow the packing list. Now is the time to get any new/borrowed gear prepped for your camping experience. A packing list is available at http://www.scoutsiowa.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Summer-Camp-Packing-List.pdf
  • Like the Camp C.S. Klaus Facebook page. Stay up to date with photos throughout the week by following the camp Facebook page. This is also where information regarding any inclement weather is shared – although we hope not to have any bad weather this year!
  • Label all things. As your Scout gets packed, make sure all items are labeled so they return home. Fancy labels aren’t needed – duct tape and a permanent marker work well too!

72-hour Leader Rule

As a reminder, effective June 1st, 2018, all adults accompanying a Boy Scout troop to a Scouting activity lasting 72 hours or more must be registered as a leader. The adult application and Youth Protection will need to be processed before the event. This includes the completion of a criminal background check, which cannot be expedited. Please plan ahead!

Golf

There is still time for you to take part in either of our golf fundraisers! There are many golfing and non-golfing opportunities available. Contact Melissa at melissa.neuhaus@scouting.org or 563.556.4343 for more information.
