U.S. Grant Pilgrimage
U.S. Grant Pilgrimage theme for 2012 is “Through Perseverance, Victory” which highlights General Grant, Civil War History, and Galena’s contributions to our nation's history. While attending the Grant Pilgrimage your unit will have admission to the Galena Historical Museum, and Blacksmith Shop. The Galena Historical Museum has many new displays and the original “Peace in Union” the painting of General Lee surrendering to General Grant. There are several activities to participate in.
General Find
Participants will be handed a listing of the nine Galena Civil War Generals. These individuals will be around Galena in the general scouting areas. Participants will need to get that person's signature or stamp. Participants who collect five the signatures can purchase a special pin.
Trail Hike
Participants will receive a map with 16-18 questions. The answers to these questions are placed at historically significant places around down town Galena. The hike is usually around 5 miles and takes around 2-3 hours to complete. Hikers who complete the trail hike are able to purchase a trail medal at the Trading Post.
GPS Trail Hike
Similar to the traditional Trail Hike, but instead of a map with markers for questions, each question will be a specific coordinate. Hikers who complete this hike will also be able to purchase a trail medal.
Bucket Brigade
The Galena Fire Department holds a bucket brigade, where Troops compete for the best time to fill a large fire barrel.
Banner Competition
Units need to make up a banner highlighting the theme and a Civil War unit from their area. The banner can not be larger than 3 ft tall and 8ft across. Banners will be judged while units are marching in the parade. The winning banner will be displayed for one year in the Market House State historic Site in Galena with the Pilgrimage Display.
Scout Parade
Units can participate in the Scout parade down Main St Galena. The parade Starts at 1:30 and lasts around an hour.
Dodge ball Competition
